Silently Sinning
My silence is my sin:
Down drowning in the water
Is my dear good friend,
And I plant my feet, bite my lip
Even though I can swim;
No, I don’t say a single thing
He may be facing damnation’s pain,
And I wonder if he’ll remember me
As the rich man remembered Lazarus
Then it will be impossible to say it again
He’ll kick and scream, drowning in flames
And I won’t be able to save my old friend,
The gospel is simple, no elaborate sayings
And in my silence I have sinned,
God, please forgive him
For he did not have a good friend
Perhaps he heard from another saint
Before he faced his wrathful fate,
I hope he will be my heavenly kin,
But for now I know
That in my silence; I have sinned.
