The Poem

The Poem

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that scholars will quote with a rhyme;
That fathers will sing to their boys,
And children will reenact with toys

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that grooms whisper to brides;
That girls will day dream of,
And men use to express love

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that oppressors see as a crime;
That advocates of truth hold in hand,
And that is often burned fanning the flame

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that prophets see as a sign;
That futurists passionately dissect,
And upon which the intelligentsia place their bet

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that challenges saints with a line;
That provokes spiritual renewal,
And makes the self-righteous fools

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that makes the depressed shine;
That seekers find what they’re looking for,
And others come across a new door

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that reads as an adventurous climb;
That sets the soul running free,
And ladies delight in with tea

I would like to write a poem that withstands time
One that new students rejoice to find;
That spurs artists along,
And echoes as a melodious song.
