William the Great
Let me tell you a tale
Of when war ships set sale,
And young men were armed to fight
With sunbeams dashing off the metallic knight
Let me tell you an old story
Back when King’s had glory
When words had rooted meanings,
And truth stood outside man’s feelings
In that crisp and dangerous time
One man stood against a crime
A malicious act of the first manner
However, it caused only a subtle clamor
When an evil monarch rules
All are used as his tools,
So the crime goes unseen
For fear of an authoritative feign
One man stands alone
For justice to be sown
One man, at times is enough
If others can dare to be as tuff
William stood the tyrant eye to eye
And asked the obvious question of why,
Why do you make the common cry?
And why do you make the young men die?
In indignation the king swore to kill,
But he was not done receiving William’s bill;
For William was a man of humility
And hoped to understand with no futility
At first the king sought to sober such curiosity
By proclaiming truthful intentions with veracity;
“I am the king and I do as I please
Rebel and your life will cease.”
William was not satisfied, nor was the king
Both pondered what this could mean,
And soon the king found his countenance drop
As William’s child-like questions did not stop
The king was now more puzzled to despair
He found himself offering William a chair,
And asked of what sort of solutions could be had
To end how his country had tirelessly gone mad
William was bewildered by the word,
And found he did not despise his troubled lord;
Justice! William thought
Justice cannot be bought
The king agreed to a court of judges,
And written laws with no fudges;
What next? The king stated and thought:
“For too long have my people and I fought.”
Yes! William said with a smile
Oppression has been your sin for a while;
Let the common people breathe
And some prisoners freely leave
You could tell the king’s burden was being lifted,
But soon his thoughts shifted;
“What of rule, discipline and order?
Everything cannot be left to disorder.”
William nodded in agreement,
But knew liberty could not be bent;
Truth and Justice would have to rein the land
So country would not be made of sand
The king told William: “Goodbye for now
My stomach is in need of some chow,
But William pressed forward about the poor
How they don’t even have the crumbs of the king’s floor
The king saw that tonight was no normal night
And that William spoke of a long fight;
The king decided he would act swiftly for change
While never loosing center stage
“Democracy with a voice for all,
But the king shall not fall
For prudence and tradition must have their place,
And this country will need a leading face
I will create cabinets with advisers to aid
All will be fairly paid;
Markets can be open and free
And ideas discussed and debated across the sea
Friends shall be established beyond our borders
Allegiances shall create greater orders;
Schools shall take the riches’ corridors
Education shall lead to many doors
Change shall come and bring life to this land
Pastors shall openly preach of the divine plan,
Doctors will bring the healing in need
Farms shall have plenty for all to feed
There shall be variety, eloquence, and honesty in the press,
And all worshippers shall with heart and mind confess;
I think you William for taking a stance,
And perhaps now others can have a chance.”
So, the king went about the business directly and with might
All that see him claim he has a soft grin since that night,
For one chivalrous and noble lad, truly did change this land,
And the Great William did it without raising a hand.
