An Ancient Prayer

An Ancient Prayer

In the early morning, old man on bent knees,
I hear an ancient prayer, Our Father;
Young men and women, gathered upon the Rockies,
I hear an ancient prayer, Who art in heaven;
Late, lonely, Friday night, a single woman bows,
I hear an ancient prayer, Hallowed be thy name;
Tucked in, teddy bears in arms, little ones whisper,
I hear an ancient prayer, Your kingdom come;
Crisp, early morning, the country church recites,
I hear an ancient prayer, Your will be done;
University chapel, new disciples stand tall,
I hear an ancient prayer, on earth as it is heaven;
Reunited family, gathered around the table,
I hear an ancient prayer, give us this day;
Journalists meet at the coffee shop, muttering,
I hear an ancient prayer, our daily bread;
Soldiers clasp hands in run-down barracks,
I hear an ancient prayer, and forgive us our debts;
A broken marriage, slowly healed, reconciled,
I hear an ancient prayer, as we forgive our debtors;
Adolescent athletes circle round,
I hear an ancient prayer, and lead us not into temptation;
Businessmen, briefcases and bibles on desks,
I hear an ancient prayer, but deliver us from the evil one;
Wedding ceremony, bride and groom lock eyes,
I hear an ancient prayer, for Yours is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory forever, amen.
